Background Note on SDG 16 "Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions" (AFSD 2021)

COVID-19 has simultaneously highlighted the governance deficit in the region and the important role of institutions in responding to the multiple crises caused by the pandemic. It has also thrown into further relief the multiple humanitarian crises in the region, as conflict and violence continue to ravage communities and infrastructure, further exacerbating vulnerabilities.

This background note presents facts on the impact of COVID-19 on SDG 16 in the Arab region, the measures taken by Arab Governments as well as the most at risk of being left behind, and introduces some policy recommendations for ensuring an inclusive recovery and achieving SDG 16 by 2030.
